There’s something quietly powerful about the moment just before a thought takes shape. Black Murex Trance captures that in-between state—where stillness meets movement and the mysterious becomes known only through silent contemplation.
 
This artwork was born out of an exploration of inner worlds. The moody, monochromatic palette draws on the psychology of grey—soft, shifting tones that reflect neutrality, introspection and calm detachment. It’s a space where nothing is rushed, where thought unfolds like breath. From within this atmosphere emerges the striking presence of the black murex shell, its darkened tips contrasting against the delicate lines that twist and unfurl into the girl’s crown.
 
The shell—morphing into the top of her head—becomes more than a beautiful form. It becomes symbolic of identity, protection and hidden layers of thought. It spirals inward and flows outward, like a dream in motion. Those long, spaghetti-like grey lines curl and dance around her, suggesting fluidity, a drifting consciousness, or perhaps thoughts carried softly on the wind. There’s a poetic rhythm to them—chaotic, yet perfectly placed.
 
Subtle gradients move from light to dark across the background, anchoring the composition while echoing a sense of transition and evolution. A faint concentric circle glows at the top of the work—a quiet centre, suggesting harmony, reflection and cycles of becoming. It’s a gentle beacon amidst the swirl, a meditative point of stillness in the grey.
 
Her gaze—tilted upwards, slightly to the side—is serene but searching. There’s something in her posture that hints at listening, as if she’s tuning into a frequency beyond words. The shell and the girl are not separate; they merge, suggesting the inseparability of thought and being, the physical and the imagined. This connection between body, mind and symbolism is deeply embedded in the visual language of this piece.
